SANDY SILVA has been teaching percussive dance for over 35 years. She draws upon her deep engagement with global percussive dance styles, integrating world dance forms into a contemporary sonic movement practice marked by groove, rhythmic flow, hand-to0-foot connection, and directional patterns of moving bodies.
Sandy’s innovative work with both professional and amateur modern dancers, tap dancers, hip-hop dancers, clog and step dancers, circus artists, school children, vocalists, percussionists, and fellow musicians has gained her an international reputation as a truly creative and inspirational teacher. Her workshops offer students essential tools for listening, analyzing, and embodying music as a human instrument.
In procession work, Sandy helps students engage in a music and movement experience expressed as a communal journey shared through a common ambulatory pulse from which rhythmic gestures, formations, and vocalizations emerge. The result is a multigenerational and multicultural activity, for participants of multiple abilities, using music, dance, and vocals. A core group of participants learn key song and movement techniques in the workshops and then lead the procession, allowing community members to join in the song and gesture alongside.
